MoveOn Queens big “Summer Launch” event for our campaign “The Other 98%”. This is a MEETING event. Are you sick of how Big Oil, Wall St. and Big Insurance keep pulling the strings of Congress? Then you’re ready to begin challenging corporate influence to take back OUR government. Solo, your voice is lost in the lobbyists’ din, but as a chorus we can get the attention we need for vital reform. Oil Spill Movie Night – “Moving Beyond Oil” The Sierra Club and Brave New Films’ short documentary about the true effects that the BP oil disaster is having on the Gulf Coast, and why we need to end our addiction to oil. The week of June 28th, hundreds of houseparties will happen all over the country as people talk with their friends about how we can help the Gulf Coast and move our nation beyond oil.

May 21st is annually recognized in Colombia as AfroColombian Day, a celebration of the abolition of slavery in Colombia, which occurred in 1851. In recognition of this day join AfroColombia NY in two events which commemorate and celebrate the AfroColombian heritage and culture.

From Currulao to Hip-Hop: AfroColombian Music Past, Present and Future

We present an homage to AfroColombian music. Currulao is amongst the most recognizably AfroColombian music genres to-date; but the influence of AfroColombian culture on other genres of music, such as Salsa and Hip-Hop, is ever present. The event will feature Diego Obregon, Charlie Cajares and Calle Cardona & Que TV! Cosponsored by Terraza 7 Train Cafe. Special AfroColombian drinks will be offered!

The political grass roots organization, MoveOn, is having a movie night March 27th. This is happening nationally at the same time to make it “energy effect”! (sounds fun, hum?) And thanks to the generosity of Terraza 7 Train Cafe, the Queens members of MoveOn will be able to watch it on a big screen!!

One of MoveOn’s campaigns this year is “Rooting out corporate influence in Washington”. I am sure many of you recognize how much power corporations have, illustrated by the Health Care issue.

For the start of this campaign, we picked the Michael Moore documentary “Capitalism-A Love Story”. His usual humorous touch will make it easier to find out how things are working on Wall St. and in Washington!…..without getting too angry : )
